My KIP Moto SherpaX Dual-Sport Trailer

When you can't fit all of your stuff on your motorcycle, just buy a trailer and pull all of your crap behind you!

The SherpaX trailer attached to my Honda Africa Twin

In April of 2023, I discovered the KIP Moto SherpaX trailer on some forums and instantly fell in love with it. The price was pretty steep at an eye-watering $1,245, but this was a hand-made trailer specifically designed for dual-sport motorcycles. Since I had already done some camping with my Africa Twin, I weighed the pros and cons of getting something like this, and ended up placing my order. Two months later, it had arrived from Canada 🇨🇦, neatly packed inside of itself.

The Build

The trailer was designed to fit this specific 24 gallon Rubbermaid Action Packer, which appeared to be pretty popular with the off-roading community. Because of that, I found the SWAG Offroad Baja Bin, which is a lockable cage for securing an Action Packer on your trailer or vehicle. Turns out it could be mounted to the SherpaX trailer, so I picked one up to secure my cargo when unattended.

The SherpaX is also RotopaX-ready, so I picked up a two 1.75 gallon tanks: one for fuel and one for water. I also picked up two locking mounts so I could secure the tanks to the trailer without worrying about theft.

One thing I really wanted to do to the trailer was add some custom wiring to add an auxiliary brake light, turn signals, and marker lights. First I needed to figure out a way to a light. After some product searching on Amazon, I had an idea. I have a friend who can weld, so I sent him this quick mockup and asked if he could make me a quick bracket.

Now that I had the light figured out, I was able to create my own custom wiring harness and 6-pin plug to quickly connect to the bike. The Eastern Beaver Company, based out of Japan, sells quality connectors and offers pre-made harnesses for tapping into the OEM brake light and turn signal wires on the Africa Twin. I already had some of those on hand and used them to tap into both turn signals and the brake and running lights. I also ran 12V fused power and ground to the connector for running/charging accessories inside the trailer while the bike is running.
